Incidents against Minorities
Members of the minority communities face many forms of persecution from Islamic extremists in Bangladesh. Here we present a collection of the most recent incidents highlighting this awful persecution. The following incidents have been collected by local reporters in Bangladesh.

April 2005

I. April 1, 2005. Madhab bari area, Jaidevpur town, Gazipur district (proximately northwest of the capital city of Dhaka). A prominent Islamic fundamentalist named Md.Shah Alam has constructed a building by illegally occupying the boundary wall of Shree Shree Manikodham Hindu Temple. Local sources have confirmed that there is a plan by Alam to occupy the temple in the near future.

II. April 2, 2005. Chuadanga district (in southwestern Bangladesh bordering the Indian state of West Bengal). The police arrested Shyamal Sarkar, a member of the local Hindu minority community and the General Secretary of the local branch of Bangladesh Workers Party in a false case. He later died in Jessore Sadar Hospital while undergoing treatment for injuries he suffered when being beaten up in police custody.

III. April 6, 2005. Nabachara village, Bamaichori sub-district, Rangamati district (in southeastern Bangladesh bordering the Indian states of Tripura and Mizoram). Islamic fundamentalists killed a Buddhist tribal named Bijoy Chakma (age 60), a local resident of the area.

IV. April 6, 2005. Aamgram village, Rajori sub-district, Madaripur district (south of the capital city of Dhaka). Islamic fundamentalists attacked the home of Srikant Das a local Hindu villager. Seema Das, Ripon Das and Liton Das were injured in the attack. The gang looted goods and valuables worth in excess of 200,000 Taka (approximately US $3333).

V. April 7, 2005. Darga Bazar, Bhanga sub-district, Faridpur district (proximately southeast of the capital city of Dhaka). Islamic fundamentalists robbed 250,000 Taka (approximately US $4200) from a local Hindu businessman named S. Kundu.

VI. April 7, 2005. Alaipur area, Sadar police station, Magura district (west of the capital city of Dhaka). Bipul Bose, a bank officer at the Munsigunj Sonali Bank and a member of the local Hindu community, was stabbed to death by a group of Islamic reactionaries.

VII. April 14, 2005. Bahubal sub-district, Habiganj district (in northeastern Bangladesh bordering the Indian state of Tripura). Two prominent Islamic reactionaries named Saleem Chowdhury and Khalil Chowdhury are trying to illegally occupy a Hindu funeral area named Hindu Sabdaha Mirpur Choumohanir Samsan Ghat.

VIII. April 15, 2005. Nayapara locality, South Kuish area, Hathhazari sub-district, Chittagong district (in southeastern Bangladesh bordering the Indian state of Tripura). Armed Islamic reactionaries raided the home of a Hindu named Sudhir Biswas and completely looted the home.

IX. April 15, 2005. Jessore district town (in southwestern Bangladesh bordering the Indian state of West Bengal). Islamic fundamentalists brutally murdered two Hindu residents of the area named Shanakar Roy and his wife Anjana Roy on Hathkhola Road. The local police said that Anjana was first raped and then forced to swallow poison, while Shankar was brutally strangled to death.

X. April 15, 2005. Safela village, Sadar sub-district, Sumanganj district. Islamic reactionaries brutally killed Kshitesh Das (age 30), a Hindu resident of the village.

XI. April 17, 2005. Dhaka (capital city of Bangladesh). Armed Islamic reactionaries killed a Hindu businessman named Madhab Sakar (age 45) and his employee Bhatija Bhussan Sarkar (age 25) in the Tantibazar area located in the old Dhaka city.

XII. April 18, 2005. Dhaka (capital city of Bangladesh). A local Hindu fish merchant named Ranjit Chandra Das (age 30) was shot to death by armed Islamic fundamentalists. He was a resident of house no. GP K 15/12/18 in the Mohakhali area of Dhaka.

XIII. April 25, 2005. Thakurgaon district (in northwestern area of Bangladesh bordering the Indian state of West Bengal). At least 300 members of the local tribal community made a surrounded the office of the district administrator to protest against the militant activities of Islamic fundamentalists in the villages of Nargoon, Khochabari, Chandipur, Farbari and Jagannathpur.

Undated Incidents:

Kulpoddi area, Madaripur district (south of the capital city of Dhaka). Recently a group of Islamic reactionaries under the leadership of Motiar Rahaman Chokdar illegally occupied a Hindu funeral area and erected a mosque on the site. When the local municipality objected, a group of Islamic fundamentalists along with hundreds of other Muslims rallied in the city and shouted slogans against the local Hindu community.

Mordanga village, Pachuria Union Parishad, Rajbari district (west of the capital city of Dhaka). The local police failed to take action against those responsible for the brutal murder of Subrato Seal, a local Hindu villager, even after 35 days.

Uthuri village, Gafargaon police station, Mymensingh district (in northern Bangladesh bordering the Indian state of Meghalaya). Recently a prominent Islamic reactionary named Najmul Hoque abducted a Hindu student named Ratna Dhar.
